What Are Dental Crowns and When Do You Need One?

A dental crown functions as a tooth-shaped cap that completely covers the visible portion of your tooth above the gum line. These custom-fitted devices restore decayed, broken, weak or worn-down teeth, providing both structural support and cosmetic enhancement.

You might need a dental crown if you’re experiencing any of these common dental issues. Crowns strengthen weak teeth, protect and support cracked teeth, restore worn-down or broken teeth, hold dental bridges in place, cover severely stained or discolored teeth, cover root canal-treated teeth, or cover dental implants. The versatility of crown treatments makes them one of the most frequently performed restorative dental procedures.

When extensive tooth decay has compromised too much of the natural tooth structure for a traditional filling to work effectively, a crown becomes necessary. Similarly, if you’ve undergone root canal therapy, a crown protects the treated tooth from future damage. Fractured teeth that extend through the enamel into the softer dentin layer may require crowns when the damage is too extensive for fillings alone.

Choosing the right crown material significantly impacts both the longevity and appearance of your restoration. Modern dentistry offers several excellent options, each with distinct advantages suited to different situations.

Understanding Different Types of Dental Crown Materials

Porcelain and All-Ceramic Crowns

Porcelain crowns have become the preferred choice for many patients, particularly for front teeth, where aesthetics matter most. All-ceramic crowns provide natural-looking characteristics, including shape, size, and color, making them particularly popular for crowning or replacing a front tooth. These restorations blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth, creating an invisible repair that maintains your natural smile.

The advancement in ceramic materials has dramatically improved durability. One of the most popular ceramic materials is zirconium dioxide, which creates extremely durable crowns that can withstand heavier forces than other types of ceramic crowns while remaining gentle on opposing teeth. This combination of strength and aesthetics has made zirconia crowns increasingly popular for both front and back teeth.

Metal and Gold Crowns

Metal crowns, typically made from gold alloys or base metal alloys containing chromium and nickel, offer exceptional durability. Metal crowns rarely chip or break, last the longest in terms of wear, and only require a small amount of enamel removal. These characteristics make them ideal for posterior teeth that handle significant chewing forces.

The primary drawback remains their metallic appearance, which makes them unsuitable for visible teeth. However, for molars and other back teeth, metal crowns provide unmatched longevity and require minimal tooth preparation.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns

For patients seeking a balance between durability and natural appearance, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns offer a compelling middle ground. These crowns provide both strength due to their metal structure and aesthetics due to the porcelain coat that covers the cap, and they’ve been around for over 50 years with proven reliability.

However, PFM crowns do have limitations. The metal in these crowns may cause a grey line at the gumline, which may not provide the complete aesthetic look that all-porcelain crowns deliver. Additionally, for patients who clench or grind their teeth, the porcelain coating can wear down opposing teeth more quickly.

Resin Crowns

Dental crowns made from resin are generally less expensive than other types of crowns, but they’re fragile and more likely to break compared to porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Dentists typically reserve resin for temporary crowns or interim solutions, as they last three to five years on average.

The Dental Crown Procedure: What to Expect

Understanding the crown placement process helps alleviate anxiety and prepares you for what lies ahead. Most traditional crown procedures require two appointments, though same-day crowns have become increasingly available.

First Appointment: Preparation and Temporary Crown

Your dentist begins by numbing the affected tooth and the surrounding area to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. To prepare your tooth for a crown, your dentist removes some natural enamel to make space for the new crown and ensure it stays in place once bonded. The dentist may also use filling material to build up weakened areas, creating a strong foundation for your restoration.

Next comes the impression process. Your dentist takes impressions of your teeth using either physical impressions with putty-like material or digital impressions with a handheld scanner. These precise measurements ensure your permanent crown fits perfectly with your bite and matches your adjacent teeth.

During the waiting period while your permanent crown is being fabricated, you’ll wear a temporary crown. The temporary crown is typically worn for a period of a few weeks before a permanent one is ready to be placed. Taking proper care of this temporary restoration ensures it protects your prepared tooth until the permanent crown arrives.

Same-Day Crown Technology

Many dental practices now offer same-day crowns using advanced CAD/CAM technology. This software allows your dentist to take digital dental impressions of your teeth, then use those impressions to design a custom crown, sending the image files to an on-site milling machine that crafts your new crown from a solid block of ceramic. The main advantage of this technology is that you can receive your crown in just one office visit, eliminating the need for temporary crowns and multiple appointments. Our same-day crown technology allows us to service everyone from John Wayne Airport to the Great Park Neighborhood in Irvine CA, with the same highest quality of care.

Second Appointment: Permanent Crown Placement

When your permanent crown is ready, typically two to three weeks after your first visit, you return for the final placement. Your dentist removes the temporary crown, thoroughly cleans the prepared tooth, and checks the fit of your permanent crown. After making any necessary adjustments to ensure proper bite alignment, they permanently cement the crown in place using a strong dental adhesive.

Key Benefits of Dental Crown Treatment

Investing in a dental crown provides numerous advantages that extend beyond simple tooth repair. Understanding these benefits helps you appreciate the value of this restorative treatment.

Long-Term Tooth Preservation

The most notable advantage of a dental crown is that it can prolong the life of a natural tooth by treating worn, broken or decayed teeth, protecting teeth from erosion, and improving chewing function. This preservation of your natural tooth structure always surpasses the alternatives of extraction and replacement.

Restored Functionality

A damaged tooth often makes eating uncomfortable or even painful. Dental crowns eliminate these issues by providing a new, durable chewing surface. By providing a new biting surface, crowns improve the functionality of damaged teeth, allowing for better chewing and speaking. You can confidently return to enjoying your favorite foods without fear of further damage or discomfort.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Beyond function, crowns dramatically improve the appearance of compromised teeth. Custom-fitted caps can be crafted to improve tooth shape, size, and alignment while maintaining natural tooth appearance, with adjustments to color, translucency, and surface texture to perfectly match surrounding natural teeth. This level of customization ensures your restoration looks completely natural.

Durability and Longevity

When properly cared for, dental crowns prove remarkably durable. Crowns last between five and fifteen years with proper care, and some materials like gold and zirconia can last even longer. With proper care, crowns can last up to twenty years, making them a worthwhile investment in your oral health.

Protection Against Further Damage

Once a tooth has been weakened by decay, fracture, or extensive filling, it becomes vulnerable to additional damage. The crown covers the entire tooth and creates a barrier between the vulnerable tooth and the rest of the mouth, preventing harmful bacteria, acids, sugars, and starch from coming into contact with the tooth. This protective function helps prevent future dental problems.

Recovery and Aftercare Following Crown Placement

Proper aftercare following your crown procedure ensures optimal healing and extends the life of your restoration. Most patients experience a smooth, relatively quick recovery process.

Immediate Post-Procedure Care

On the first day after dental crown placement, it’s normal to experience mild discomfort, sensitivity, or slight swelling around the treated tooth, with dentists advising avoiding hard or sticky foods and chewing on the opposite side of your mouth. Over-the-counter pain relievers effectively manage any soreness during this initial period.

If local anesthetic was used during your procedure, the numbing effect may persist for several hours. During this time, patients are prone to burn or bite themselves unknowingly because they are unable to feel warning sensations such as heat or pain, making it recommended to avoid drinking hot liquids or chewing hard foods.

First Week Recovery

By the end of the first week, most patients notice a significant reduction in discomfort and sensitivity, with the crown beginning to feel more natural and everyday activities like eating and brushing becoming easier. You may still be adjusting to your bite, so report any sharp or uneven sensations to your dentist immediately.

Complete Healing Timeline

Full recovery after getting a dental crown usually takes about one month, as this allows the surrounding gum tissue and bite to fully adjust to the new crown, though most people feel well enough to resume normal eating and oral care habits within a few days to two weeks following the procedure.

Caring for Your Temporary Crown

If you receive a temporary crown, it requires special attention. Patients should wait at least 30 minutes after the temporary cap is placed before eating or drinking to allow the cement to dry, and avoid chewing gum or any chewy, sticky, or hard foods since they can cause dental crowns to dislocate. Patients should also chew on the opposite side of their mouth whenever possible and floss carefully around the temporary crown.

Long-Term Maintenance

Once your permanent crown is in place, maintaining good oral hygiene becomes essential. Taking good care of your crown includes brushing twice daily and flossing, along with regular dental exams to support long-term crown stability and extend the life of your restoration. Avoid using your crowned tooth to bite extremely hard foods, ice, or non-food items that could crack or dislodge the crown.

Potential Risks and Considerations

While dental crowns are generally safe and effective, being aware of potential complications helps you make informed decisions and recognize when to seek additional care.

Common Side Effects

Some patients may experience discomfort shortly after the procedure, particularly sensitivity to hot or cold, which can be managed using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth when brushing. This sensitivity typically resolves within a few weeks as your mouth adjusts to the new restoration.

Another issue is pain or sensitivity when biting down, which is most often caused by the crown being too high and obstructing the teeth on the opposite jaw, though this can easily be remedied by adjusting the height of the crown. Contact your dentist promptly if you experience persistent discomfort during chewing.

Potential Complications

Crowns may sometimes become chipped, particularly those made of porcelain, with small chips possible to repair without removing the crown, while larger or multiple breaks in the crown may require complete replacement. Regular dental checkups help identify early signs of wear before major problems develop.

In rare cases, the dental cement holding the crown in place may wash away over time, causing the crown to feel loose. Increased risk of infection, loosening or detaching of the crown, and placement over areas of untreated tooth decay are potential complications that require prompt attention. Immediate dental care prevents more serious problems when issues arise.

Preventing Problems

Choosing an experienced dentist dramatically reduces the likelihood of complications. Proper crown placement requires precision and skill. Additionally, crown placement requires some removal of natural tooth enamel, which is irreversible, making it crucial to work with a qualified professional who preserves as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Dental Crown Costs and Insurance Coverage

Understanding the financial aspects of crown treatment helps you plan accordingly and explore available options for making care affordable.

Price Range and Factors

The cost of dental crowns in Irvine varies based on several factors. The price of a dental crown varies, but on average is approximately twelve hundred to fifteen hundred dollars, with the type of dental crown material used being the biggest factor in price.

Porcelain crowns for front teeth typically range from eight hundred to three thousand dollars per tooth, metal crowns often used for molars cost between six hundred and twenty-five hundred dollars per tooth, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns usually cost between five hundred and fifteen hundred dollars per tooth, and zirconia crowns cost one thousand to twenty-five hundred dollars per tooth.

Additional factors affecting cost include the complexity of your case, whether you need preliminary treatments like root canals or core build-ups, your dentist’s experience and expertise, and the geographic location of the dental practice.

Insurance Coverage

Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for crowns when deemed medically necessary. Contact your insurance company to determine your coverage for dental crowns, as some plans may cover part of the cost. Typically, insurance covers approximately 50% of crown costs after meeting your deductible, though coverage specifics vary widely between plans.

Document any symptoms or functional problems your damaged tooth causes, as insurance companies more readily approve claims when crowns address medical necessity rather than purely cosmetic concerns.

Making Treatment Affordable

If cost concerns prevent you from getting necessary treatment, explore available options. Our dental practice offers flexible payment plans that allow you to spread the cost over several months. Some offices also work with financing companies that provide low-interest or interest-free payment options for qualified patients.

Consider dental savings plans as an alternative to traditional insurance. These membership programs provide reduced rates on dental services, including crowns, often saving you 20-30% on treatment costs.

Finding the Right Dentist for Dental Crowns in Irvine

Selecting a qualified, experienced dentist for your crown procedure significantly impacts your results and overall experience. Several key factors should guide your decision.

Qualifications and Experience

Look for a dentist who is licensed and has completed an accredited dental program, and beyond basic qualifications, consider their experience specifically with dental crowns by asking how many crown procedures they have performed and if they have advanced training in restorative dentistry. Dentists with extensive crown placement experience better handle complications and achieve superior results.

Technology and Materials

Modern dental technology dramatically improves crown procedures. The technology and materials a dentist uses for dental crowns can significantly affect the outcome of your procedure, so inquire about the types of crowns they offer and the technology used to create them. Practices using CAD/CAM technology for same-day crowns or digital impressions instead of traditional molds typically provide more comfortable, accurate results.

Patient Reviews and Testimonials

Patient reviews and recommendations provide insight into a dentist’s reputation and quality of care, so check online platforms such as Google Reviews to read feedback from previous patients. Pay particular attention to comments about crown-specific experiences, communication style, and how the practice handles any complications or concerns.

Questions to Ask During Consultation

Before undergoing any dental procedure, assessing your dentist’s qualifications is important by asking about their education, specialized training, and years of experience in restorative dentistry. Additional questions should include what crown materials they recommend for your specific situation and why, whether they offer same-day crown options, what their process looks like from start to finish, how they handle complications if they arise, and what warranty or guarantee they provide on crown work.

A good dentist will educate you rather than rush you, building trust through transparency and never hesitating to answer questions about materials, pricing, or procedures. If a provider seems reluctant to discuss these details or pressures you to proceed without adequate information, consider that a warning sign.

Local Irvine Dental Crown Providers

Irvine offers numerous experienced dental practices specializing in crown treatment. When researching local options, look for practices that emphasize personalized care, use modern technology, provide transparent pricing, offer convenient scheduling including same-day appointments, and demonstrate clear communication about treatment options.

Common Questions About Dental Crowns

Dental crowns last between five and fifteen years with proper care, though longevity varies by material choice. Zirconia or gold crowns last ten to fifteen years, while porcelain crowns can last five to fifteen years, though these are averages and results can vary significantly in individual variation. Proper oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and avoiding habits like teeth grinding significantly extend crown lifespan.

The crown procedure itself causes minimal discomfort thanks to modern anesthesia. Your dentist will use local anesthetic to provide minimal discomfort during dental procedures. Some sensitivity or mild soreness after the anesthetic wears off is normal but typically resolves within a few days with over-counter pain medication.

Yes, you can generally eat normally with a dental crown, however it’s best to avoid chewing on hard objects such as ice or pens as this can potentially damage the crown, and it’s advisable to steer clear of sticky foods that could dislodge the crown. After the initial healing period, your crowned tooth functions just like a natural tooth.

Postponing necessary crown treatment can lead to serious complications. The damaged tooth may become weaker over time, eventually requiring extraction rather than restoration. Without the protective covering a crown provides, bacteria can more easily penetrate the compromised tooth structure, potentially causing infections that spread to surrounding teeth and gum tissue.

Your dentist determines the appropriate treatment based on the extent of damage. Generally, crowns become necessary when more than half of the tooth structure is compromised, after root canal treatment, when a tooth has cracked through multiple surfaces, or when a tooth has repeatedly failed with traditional fillings. Your dentist evaluates your specific situation through examination and X-rays.

Schedule Your Dental Crown Consultation in Irvine

Stan Chien Irvine Best 92618 Dental Office

“Dr. Chien is knowledgeable, professional, skilled and friendly. He is always patient and explain with you the root cause and care plan.” – Lina G. (August 2017)

I highly recommend Dr. Stan Chien. Great personality and great dentist. He is very knowledgeable and wants to make sure you are taking care of your teeth health before it’s too late. Always giving me lots of great tips and I look forward to coming in and getting my teeth clean. Kudos to the staff for the great service and keep up the great work.

I have had Dr. Chien as my dentist for the last 15 years. I have had great results there. I have had general dental care and also a couple implants, fillings and crowns.
I am a bruxer so have had night guards to prevent that.
I myself am an ENT doctor so I am probably very discriminating about dental care. I have always felt safe and well cared for by Dr. Chien and his staff. I recommend him to my friends and also my patients who can go to Irvine.

Always kind, detailed, and professional. I have complete trust in Dr Chien and his staff.

I am so grateful to have found Dr. Chien! He is so kind and thorough in his work, even with a routine check-up and cleaning. It was a very comfortable experience and I highly recommend him.

I had my teeth cleaned today and as always I was very pleased with the service/staff. Dr. Stan Chien was extremely knowledgeable & polite. He answered all my questions/concerns and put me at ease. I highly recommend him for your dental needs.

Very friendly and professional staff. Dr. Chien is outgoing and personable. He truly is concerned about his patients and takes time to get to know his patients. Everyone, from the front desk to the hygienist and including Dr. Chien, go above and beyond to ensure that I am comfortable and fully informed of what is happening, what they are doing next and how long the process will take. They truly make me feel like a “VIP”.

If you are like me, I have always disliked (despised) visiting the dentist. I know it is necessary but I have always thought of a visit as a necessary evil. And, as a result, have often procrastinated…resulting in more pain and expense…

These professionals in this office make me reassess my thoughts and impressions of dental visits. I look forward to going. Not only do I leave with clean teeth (a feeling I truly enjoy) and a level of comfort knowing my mouth is healthy – I also leave feeling like I have just received VIP treatment – which I have.

Looking for a new dental professional? I highly recommend Dr. Chien and his staff. I believe you will see why I leave feeling like a very confident VIP!

I hate going to the dentist. Period.

However, Dr. Chien is the best dentist I have ever had! He explains everything to you in detail, is very honest, and gives great advice. He even gives you a call to check on everything, a day after you go in for something big like a tooth ache, crown, etc. That really impressed me since my previous dentists never did that! His staff members are friendly, the office is always clean, and they have nice high-tech equipment.

My advice is: if they tell you to floss more, do it. If you need to wear a night guard, do it. If they tell you to come in for cleanings every 4 months instead of 6, do it. They really are trying to help you improve your dental health, and you can avoid making even more trips to the dentist each year! I would definitely recommend Dr. Chien to everyone!

It was my first visit with Dr. Stan Chien. It was everything the comments have mentioned from previous patients. I wanted to find someone closer to where I live. He was very professional and I find that he has a “warm” approach with patients. I wanted to leave this review as I know how comments really assist others. I am glad to have made my first visit. His staff was very professional.

My first visit was such a nice experience.. Stan the dentist was very attentive and took the time to review everything with me ! I highly recommend them!

Been going here for a year. Costs are great, dentist is always friendly, hygienist does their best for me! They are incredibly accommodating with reschedules. I wish I lived in Irvine sooner!

I cannot speak highly enough of Dr.Stan Chein and his incredible team. After being told by another dentist that I needed three urgent crowns, and two root canals for the pain which started after I had gotten two crowns by him. I was lucky enough to find Dr. Chein and went in for a second opinion.
From the moment I stepped into his office, I knew that I was in good hands. Dr. Chein is not only honest, but also incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. He took the time to thoroughly examine my teeth and develop a treatment plan that was both conservative and effective. Dr. Chein found the true source of my pain, which was bad occlusion of the previous crown that I had gotten. I was amazed by his level of care and attention to detail. He saved my teeth from needing unnecessary root canals and urgent crowns and my pain is completely gone! His gentle and conservative approach to dentistry is truly remarkable, and I felt confident that I was receiving the best possible care.
Overall, Dr.Chein is hands down the best dentist I have ever been to, and I would not trust anyone else with my dental care. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a skilled, honest, and caring dentist. Thank you, Dr. Chein, for everything!

Dr. Chien has looked after the teeth of me and my family for years. He has always been super attentive to the condition of our teeth and has advised us of potential problems we might face as well as suggested preventive measures to avoid them. Yesterday I went for a temporary crown for a crown that had fallen off. The visit was painless and smooth and I had no problems whatsoever sitting there for 2.5 hours.

A special shoutout to Sally who was his assistant in the procedure and was more than an assistant. She not only knew her work very well but was also very understanding and offered a lot of emotional support. I had the best dental experience yesterday thanks to her and Dr. Chien. Thank you Sally for being such a good friend and for being so caring and supportive!

Dr Chien and his staff were great. His office and different rooms I went to were spotlessly clean and they took every precaution to make me feel safe. They were all very professional, friendly, knowledgeable and thorough in their approach to taking care of me.

I had my teeth cleaned today and as always I was very pleased with the service/staff. Dr. Stan Chien was extremely knowledgeable & polite. He answered all my questions/concerns and put me at ease. I highly recommend him for your dental needs.

I went to Dr. Chien for my implant crown consultation. The front desk staff, Marc, has been very helpful. Dr. Chien is a very knowledgeable dentist. He took his time to explain every detail of implant crown to me and answered my questions patiently. I came out of his office and found myself gaining some important information on what to expect when getting an implant crown. I am glad to have visited Dr. Chien !

A great Dr., who is very personable and has great etiquette. I have been to many many dentists and so far he and his office staff are the BEST. If you hate going to the Dentist, (like I do), you will love this place. All the staff are incredibly kind and understanding. My stress level starts to go down once I am in the chair. Monica is a wonderful hygienist and explains everything!! The front office staff make checking in and checking out a breeze. I cannot remember their names but they are very helpful and explain the amount of the bill very clearly, so there are no surprises. Give this place a try, you won’t regret it!!

Dr. Chien is knowledgeable, professional, skilled and friendly. He is always patient and explain with you the root cause and care plan. He even called to follows up after each treatment which is really impressive. I had one tooth needs to do crown. When he did the needle numbing my gum, I did not feel pain at all. And after the treatment, he gave me a clear care plan to make it comfortable. Dr. Chien is definitely a trustable dentist.

Cleaning service is wonderful. Office is clean and comfortable. His team is friendly and you can have message reminder before appointment.

Highly recommended Dr. Chien and his team.
